Wednesday 1 May 2013
Gaynor is about to leave for North Wales, and is so confident that she tells Hywel to start packing; he sees Angela returning to the village and smiles at her. In the café, Dai is boasting how he saw the burglar off with some Judo holds; only Diane’s new jewellery and cash were taken. Kevin gives “Rambo” a free coffee. Debbie tells Mark there must be a way to fund the school trip.
Angela first goes to Eileen’s to see Courtney, and explains she is renting a house in the village, so Courtney can live with her, and gives her an iPad (looks seriously like bribery). Then she goes to the Deri, where she is not welcomed by Meic or Gemma, who tells her Courtney does not want to live with her; Mark says that while she has been enjoying herself, others have been clearing up her mess. Then Angela goes to the café where she tells Debbie she has been staying with Bev, who makes and sells her own body lotions.
Dai looks at a “Get Fit Fast” video, and tries a routine using tins of paint as dumbbells. Angela comes out of her rented house, opposite the Chapel, and Jim sees her, reporting that Courtney has been an angel after what her mother has put her though; her school report was not so good, but he does not want her getting upset. Angela says that is why she is renting the house, and he warns her to be sure that is what Courtney wants. Mark is trying to get an additional job when Ricky comes home and says that someone has anonymously paid for his trip. Mark finds Debbie in the café kitchen, cooking up her potions, but she decides to make some money for herself instead, and warns Mark not to tell Kevin.
Angela goes to Hywel’s to speak to Gaynor about the report, but in her absence Hywel gives her a meal and several drinks; they chat about “new starts” and he reveals Gaynor’s probable new job, and tries to be enthusiastic about it. He plies her with more wine, but when she touches his hand, she suddenly recoils and leaves hurriedly, feeling embarrassed; Hywel, of course, is disappointed.
Thursday 2 May 2013
In the Deri, Mark tells Dai that they do not need Diane’s money, now that someone has donated the cost of Ricky’s school trip. In the café, Kevin can smell perfume, and later a customer complains that the flapjack tastes of perfume. Before Meic leaves the café, he puts what he thinks is gravy into the fridge; in reality it is Debbie’s rather too liquid concoction.
At home Dai tells Diane that someone has donated the money, and then jumps to the conclusion that Mark was the burglar who stole Diane’s money. When Meic reaches the Deri, he learns that Dani has booked a lunch party of 15 from Merched y Wawr (Welsh WI), but he manages to organise the food, only to realise he has forgotten the gravy, so he hurries to the café, and helps himself to the container of Cocoa Body Lotion. When Kevin discovers the truth about Debbie’s scam, and has reprimanded her, saying they face the wrath of Health and Safety, they dash to the Deri, but too late: the ladies have all been served body lotion on their roasts; at that moment, Ed returns, and immediately dismisses Meic, for this embarrassing fiasco.
Gaynor is back from North Wales, full of confidence, and says they have to make the most of their time in Cwmderi, as they do not have long. Mark calls at APD, wanting gloves for cleaning drains at school, but Dai thinks he wants leather gloves to hide fingerprints, and gets very heated, accusing Mark of breaking into Bryntirion, pushing him around. Diane arrives to see him having what looks like a heart attack, an insists on taking him to the hospital, where he is diagnosed as having angina, which can be treated by tablets.
Back home, Dai feels a failure, and admits he did not tackle the burglar, but was scared. He tells Diane he is old, and no good for her; he is an old crock, and she should go back to Enrique in Spain, but she says that he was gay, and she wants to grow old with Dai.
Gaynor has a phone call, to tell her she has been unsuccessful; she wonders why — was she too confident? They might as well paint the kitchen now; Hywel looks very relieved.
Friday 3 May 2013
Gaynor receives a phone call from Macs, saying he is not well; Mark enquires about the interview and is told she did not get the job. Hywel tells Angela when he meets her, and they arrange to have a coffee in the Deri.
At the farm, Marian has made a sponge for Bobi’s first birthday party, and mentions that it is a pity that Sioned does not have a boyfriend. Meanwhile, Sioned is not keen to attend the party, but Eileen says she has to show Eifion who’s boss.
Macs phones Rachel to come over after school; his doorbell rings, and Sioned asks if he wants a lift to Bobi’s party. Just then Rachel rings, and Sioned comments, “She’s stuck with you despite the Ffion business? She doesn’t know?”
Ed is in a bad mood, not being able to find things that Meic has moved, and Angela coming in with Hywel does not improve things. Gaynor tells Rachel she is expecting good results from her, especially in maths, and warns her not to get tied down; one of the other girls gets a message about Macs being Arwen’s father.
When Sioned and her mother arrive at Penrhewl, Eifion is nervous, and tells Sioned there is money in “artistic” photos, begging her not to tell Cadno. Sioned asks how long he has been concerned about not hurting her.
When Rachel gets to Macs’ house, she asks what has been happening, and says she has heard about what happened; did he think she would not find out? He tries to excuse himself — he was drunk, it was a one-night-stand — but Rachel says he took advantage of an alcoholic, and walks out, very angry. Hywel, helping with furniture assembly for Angela, leans across and kisses her; she slaps his face and tells him to go, now!
At Penrhewl, Marion is asleep, and Eifion tells Sioned that it is Cadno he wants; he does not know what he would do without her, but Sioned says she wants Cadno to know what he is really like. Then the others return, Cadno says that Bobi has made her realise what is important in life, and she will not let anyone ruin that. She orders Eifion to get champagne from the fridge; it is a special occasion.
Monday 6 May 2013 (1st)
Gethin is coming home again, and Moc invites people to welcome him, but only Iolo is willing; Dani and Gwyneth do not want to know. When Gethin arrives, he asks Iolo to pick up his things from Gwyneth’s, but she has already disposed of them. When Iolo returns, Gethin is angry that his wallet, driving licence and bank details have all been destroyed; Iolo gives him some clothes and an MP3 player.
Angela and Courtney have arranged to have a makeover at Debbie’s, but Angela is called away to a hospital shift, and when Jim collects Courtney he is angry that Angela has let her down again.
Anita accuses Gethin of being nasty to his father when he complains that his belongings should have been collected sooner. Gethin says that she does not want him there, and she replies that if he carries on like that she will not want him. When he wants her out, she says what happens is not up to him.
Cadno arrives back from seeing friends, and Eifion asks where she has been; “Out!” she replies. When he complains she ought to tell him, as they are partners, she says, “Shame you forgot that when you slept with Sioned!” He tries to deny it, then to maintain it meant nothing, but she says she has more self-respect than to scream and shout and tell everyone. His apologies are not going to change anything, and she feels betrayed and worthless. He has destroyed their relationship, especially when another baby is on the way. Eifion offers to leave, but she cannot run the farm on her own, so she insists he will stay as a farm hand, nothing more, and support his children
Monday 6 May 2013 (2nd)
The atmosphere at Penrhewl is very fraught; Cadno instructs Eifion to ring the vet, and says she only puts up with him for the sake of Bobi and the baby on the way.
At the Deri, Ed wants to appoint an assistant manager, and asks Meic, Gemma and Ows if they are interested; Gemma tells Meic that bar staff should be young, but he says he has the experience. Angela overhears, and soon after tells Jim she is trying for a job with regular hours. She goes to the pub to enquire about the vacancy, but Ed tells her, “Use some sense! There’s a job for you somewhere, but not here!” He confides to Ows that he is going to give the job to Gemma, but will go through the motions of CVs and interviews.
In the café, Anita and Gethin are getting at each other, and Moc tells Anita to try and get on with him. Cadno goes out alone, in fact to the Deri, and Eifion takes Bobi to Uncle Macs’, where he says he suspects that Cadno is having an affair, but Macs says she would not do that. Then the truth comes out about Eifion’s fling, with Macs surprised that it was with Sioned; “That’s a bit ambitious — Sioned is usually fussy about her men!” he remarks.
Sioned, Eileen, Jim and Courtney are having a meal in the Deri, when Cadno, rather drunk, confronts Sioned about sleeping with Eifion, and asks why she chose him. Jim goes to the bar and asks Ed to have a word with Cadno, who is causing a scene. Sioned is angry with her mother, who was aware that Cadno knew about her and Eifion. Angela’s shift has been cancelled, so she waltzes into the Deri to take Courtney home with her, but Jim tells her to arrange things beforehand.
After another can, and the advice that Cadno is only making him sweat, and to give it time, Eifion takes Bobi home, and on the way passes the Deri, hears Cadno’s raised voice, and sees Ed helping her upstairs. By this time she is so inebriated, and Deri Deithio will not transport drunks, that Ed is going to give her a cup of coffee, but after she rants about hating people, Eifion sleeping with Sioned, and her treating him simply as a farm hand from now on, she falls asleep. Eifion sits disconsolately at home, and at 12:10am she has not come home.
Tuesday 7 May 2013
Ffion is apprehensive about handing Arwen over to Britt and Siôn for babysitting. Debbie is selling cosmetics to the café customers when Meic arrives, wanting some fake tan, and is charged £7, but tells her not to let Kevin know. At the farm, Cadno comes back, and Eifion wants to know if she slept with Ed, as he saw them together; she was just getting her own back. Cadno is furious; “You think I would sleep with someone to teach you a lesson?” She says she poured out her heart to Ed, because Eifion had destroyed her life, and tells Eifion, “I hope she was worth it!”
At the Deri, Ed has given Ows a fake interview, but as Meic has not arrived, and texts to say he is ill, Gemma gets her turn. Afterwards, Ed goes over to Meic’s, gets no answer, so Kevin lets him in, and they find that Meic has turned orange, which causes some amusement; Kevin takes him to the salon for Sheryl to sort out the effects of the fake tan. She reassures him that he will always be part of the Deri.
Ffion is worrying because they are late bringing Arwen back, but then the buzzer goes; she has been as good as gold, and Britt wants to look after her again tomorrow. Eifion is interrogating Cadno about what happened, and it is obvious he does not believe her; she tells him to believe what he likes – she doesn’t care. When Meic goes to the Deri to ask for another interview, he is told that it is too late and that Gemma has the job, and also the price of a pint has gone up to £2.90.
Cadno apologises to Marian, saying there is a lot going on at the moment – the farm, Bobi, “And Eifion!” interjects Marian. Cadno wants to get some help around the place, but Marian does not want a stranger there. Kevin shouts at Debbie that her cosmetics business is nothing but trouble and he wants an end to it, but then suffers a funny turn. Britt is suddenly getting broody; although Siôn has had a vasectomy, she is adamant that she wants a baby!
Wednesday 8 May 2013
When Britt collects Arwen, she mentions that she might have a baby, which confuses Ffion and Jinx. In the café, Debbie is boxing up some cosmetics to send back, and Kevin is overdoing it, which makes him feel dizzy. Meic nags him to take it easy, but Kevin does not want Debbie to know. Garry is told the new price of a pint, and warns Ed that car servicing will also be going up.
Siôn is angry at what Britt said, and they argue in the street, right outside the café; Siôn marches off and drives away, then Kevin bursts out of the café door and falls headlong over Arwen’s pram, throwing her out. Britt panics, and Arwen is taken to the hospital, as well as Kevin, who has injured his arm.
When Ffion and Jinx rush in, Ffion goes mad, accusing Britt of negligence and banning her from any contact with Arwen. Kevin, with his arm in a sling, apologises to Ffion, and Meic explains that he had a dizzy turn, so then Ffion blames him, and he blames Britt for leaving the pram in a stupid place. Ffion tells them all to go, and they learn that Arwen is badly bruised, but otherwise all right.
Meanwhile, Sheryl is serving in the café, and tells Garry about the accident, so he goes to check on Britt. Kevin gets home and is told to rest; Meic explains to Debbie that tiredness causes the side-effects of the stroke to reappear – he must rest. Garry hears from Britt that she cannot see Arwen again, and at the Deri he starts getting angry with Jinx, but then controls his anger, offering to buy Jinx a pint. Jinx goes on about the price going up to pay for Ed’s fancy holiday.
Siôn hears about what has happened, and says it proves that Britt having a baby is not a good idea; he does not wish to have his vasectomy reversed and emphasises that he does not want another baby, a decision Britt cannot accept.
Kevin explains to Debbie that when he had the stroke, he was a burden on Sheryl, and he does not want the same thing happening with Debbie; he will be fine in a day or two, he tells her.
Thursday 9 May 2013
Siôn sees a reference in the paper to twenty new houses being built, and rants about immigrants, traffic and noise; after telling Britt this baby business must stop, he rushes off to seek support.
Eifion objects to being treated like dirt in his own home, and is told he should have thought of that before sleeping with Sioned. He is still convinced that Cadno slept with Ed, which she categorically denies; she goes out and tells him not to follow her.
Siôn goes to see Dai and Diane, but Dai already knows and has been working on the tenders; Siôn accuses Diane of representing APD rather than the local people on the Council. Then Siôn goes to the Deri, where he gets some support; he asks when is someone too old to be a father, and Colin remarks that Charlie Chaplin was 80. Siôn also tells them that Britt wants another baby.
They are still complaining about the beer prices, and Colin gets the idea of ringing a friend at the brewery; then he tells them to come to number 7 tonight. Eifion walks through the village with Bobi, when Britt comes out of the shop and offers to look after him, much to Madge’s annoyance.
Eifion then goes to the Deri and confronts Ed, warning him to stay away from Cadno. Ed replies that he is the one who has ruined things, and if he carries on like this, he will lose her for ever.
Britt is exhausted after her time with Bobi, and has got him to sleep when Eifion collects him. Angela and Debbie are in the Deri, when they get a text inviting them to a party at number 7, so they hurry round; Colin is doling out the booze cheaper than the pub, from a barrel. Debbie is worried about Kevin, not wanting to lose him, her job and her home. Angela suggests marriage, and Debbie says to save time, she will propose to him, but she must choose the right time to ask him. When Siôn gets home, he says he has been thinking, and he is willing to have a reversal, but Britt has lost her enthusiasm, and they agree to just concentrate on what they already have.
Eifion is crestfallen at home, begging to be forgiven, saying he is ashamed of his behaviour, and that they can get over this, but Cadno says, “Things can never go back to the way they were, it is too late!”
Monday 13 May 2013
Siôn is wearing a green T-shirt bearing the words “DIM STADAU MAWR” (No Large Estates) and Chester calls him a fanatic. When he takes a copy of CwmNi to Diane he accuses her of corruption, and Dai is incensed to find an anti-development flyer inside; he calls it propaganda.
Debbie is talking about redecorating the flat above the café, and Meic find a copy of “Brides” magazine, which he puts in the bin. While Dai is telling Angela the merits of the housing, Siôn is trying to get Gaynor to support his cause. When Anita goes to the café, Meic refers to Debbie as “the cuckoo in the nest” and says he is the skivvy in his own café; Anita says she is in the same position with Gethin, and tells her troubles to Angela, who offers to give her a few tips to help.
When Siôn enters the Deri with copies of CwnNi, Dai complains about the propaganda, and maintains the T-shirt should read “NIMBY”, describing Siôn as “Mr Whiter than White”. Debbie has bought paint and is hassling Kevin about the wallpaper; Meic tells her she should be working in the café, and that lying and cheating come naturally to her.
When Anita and Angela get to Moc’s, Gethin is rude and he and Anita argue. Angela says that help is available for carers; when Moc returns Gethin complains that Anita has belittled him and made him feel ashamed; she cannot stand being with him. Moc tries to calm matters, saying that he wants things back as they were; he remarks that since the accident he has “seen the child in Gethin again – fragile, weak, defenceless…” He has forgiven Gethin and wants Anita to do the same.
Angela goes to APD with advertising leaflets for “Dwylo Angel” – her proposed Angel Hands private home nursing business, and later Debbie tells her she has not yet had the chance to propose, and Meic would make sure he refused. She has a Plan B, a surprise wedding, but Angela thinks this is rather extreme, and Debbie must make sure he feels the same way. Debbie will organise a “Paris by Night” evening for them in the flat, to discover his true feelings; Angela just looks incredulous.
Tuesday 14 May 2013
Siôn is planning his campaign, and Britt tells him that Chester needs the bus fare to go to the Urdd Eisteddfod. Moc wants to take Gethin out, but he is still moaning, mostly about Anita, who says that she does all the shopping, washing and cooking; then Gethin complains that she will not help him. Moc encourages them to get on, but Anita threatens to leave, and Gethin tells him, “I’m not welcome here, so stuff your house — I’ll find somewhere else to live!”
In the Deri, Dai and Diane tell Megan that some of the housing will be “affordable”, but she points out that will only be two houses. She describes the development as disgraceful, a threat to the Welsh language and the environment, and Siôn agrees with this; Iolo does work for APD, and he favours the building work.
Debbie tells Kevin she has a surprise for him, then she tells Dani about her plan and goes to the shop for champagne. Gethin arrives outside the Deri and tells Ed that, “Dad and that woman” have thrown him out. He goes to Iolo and tells him about the “hell on earth” he has endured, persuading Iolo to let him stay there; he says he would rather sleep in the park than go back.
In the shop Garry meets Britt, and wonders why Siôn is not doing some work that pays. When Garry meets Siôn he asks, “Isn’t keeping the chapel going enough of a burden? You’re not earning a penny, out on the streets. Think of Britt and the children.”
Debbie and Kevin have their candle-lit dinner; Kevin thinks it is lovely, and is lucky to have Debbie, and Ricky; he apologises for his grumpy old father, and Debbie thinks her plan is working.
At Colin’s, the beer is flowing again, and a darts match starts, with Gethin sitting in the wheelchair. Siôn tells Britt what Garry said, and she points out that the organic veg and local meat he insists upon cost a lot of money; it is not easy, and she asks him what has priority, his principles or his family?
Wednesday 15 May 2013
After having an unsettled night, Ffion thinks Arwen is coming down with something; she has not been the same since her fall, and Jinx tries to contact Angela. Marian is having difficulty doing up her buttons, and Cadno thinks of Angela’s nursing service, so calls her to see Marian; she helps to ease the arthritis, and Marian, after telling her about Eifion’s and Cadno’s relationship problems, says she can come again.
While Colin is washing up all the beer glasses, Gethin sends a text: “Rent money please.” When a reply asks how much, he send the message, “£80 per week.” Garry presents Ed with the bill for car servicing – £80, and Sheryl wants to go shopping for Wil’s rugby kit. Gethin is alone, applying for a replacement passport, and is playing loud music, which incurs the wrath of Gwyneth next door, who complains to Colin. Gethin says that Gwyneth should pay for his new passport, but she says, “Send the bill to your dad. Why should I keep your rubbish?”
When Jinx goes round to see Gethin, the music is turned right up again; Gwynfor comes in for some beer, and soon Gwyneth is hammering on the wall to turn the noise down, and Gwern is putting his hands over his ears.
Ed gets into his car and it will not start; he goes over to the garage and waits for Garry. He returns and tries to find why the car will not start, while Ed calls him a cowboy, accuses him of taking the money and “stuff the customer!” In the end Garry suspects the coil, and upsets Sheryl by saying he cannot go shopping, but must sort out the car.
Gwyneth again complains to Colin about the unbearable noise, warning him that she will call the police, about his illegal pub. When Jinx finally manages to contact Angela, she comes to look at Arwen (who tries to sit up in her cot) and says she has a touch of jaundice; she ought to be seen by a doctor. When the doctor comes, he immediately arranges for a bed in the hospital, and for tests to be done; Ffion is very worried, and Jinx tries to reassure her.
Just past ten o’clock, Ffion and Jinx are told that Arwen has had some tests and is all right. They later learn that she has jaundice, which suggests Biliary Atresia and would need surgery, but there is a high success rate.
Ffion is convinced that the accident caused the problem and rushes off to confront Britt. Colin tells Mark that the cheap beer is over, as the neighbours complained, so Mark takes over the barrel, and they haggle, agreeing on £65. Jim is pleased about the building plans; more money will enable him and Eileen do up Courtney’s room; when he sees the “Angel Hands” leaflet, he says they should try living with her.
As the registrar wants to see both partners, and Debbie is keeping it a secret from Kevin, she enlists Mark to pretend to be him, and tells him what he has to know about Kevin, and to practise Kevin’s signature. When Ffion arrives at Britt’s, she blames her for what has happened, and says she is not fit to look after children. Ffion should never have trusted her; the baby need surgery, thanks to her. “My daughter is going under the knife — I hope you’re proud!” Jinx tries unsuccessfully to calm her.
At the register office, Mark goes rather over the top with his performance, almost giving the wrong address; Debbie is relieved when the registrar (the one who almost married Ffion and Jinx) says she will not be at the wedding at Bethania in three weeks. Outside, Mark muses that it could have been them getting married; Debbie wants him to give her away, and warns him not to say a word. When she gets back, she tells Angela what she has done, and Angela points out that it is illegal; Debbie boasts that she told the registrar that Kevin had no driving licence or passport, and got away with it. Debbie wants her as a bridesmaid.
In the Deri Angela tells Jim that her business will enable her to spend more time with Courtney, when she comes home, but says she is perfectly settled where she is. Britt enquires from Angela whether the accident could have caused Arwen’s problems; later, from the chip shop, she leaves a message for Sion, telling him all about it – she is in tears.
Jinx has looked up Biliary Atresia on the laptop, and Ffion sees the words, “Liver Transplant, without it the baby would die before it is two years old,” and is distraught. She blames herself: “My baby is seriously ill, and it’s my fault!” As it is a problem with the liver, Jinx asks if Ffion drank after the suspected miscarriage. She is furious that he could ask her that: “You helped me get through it!” Really stressed, she puts on her coat and says, “I am going back to the hospital to look after my baby!”
Friday 17 May 2013
At the hospital, Jinx still has his doubts about Ffion’s drinking, but she pleads with him that she and Arwen need him. At 15:45 she assures him, “I never touched any more booze, honestly, on Arwen’s life!” Sion decides to go to the hospital — Arwen is more important than his protest; he leaves the leaflets with Hywel. The opposition, Dai and Jim, now have blue T-shirts, “Dim Iaith Heb Waith” (No Welsh Without Work).
In the café, Meic suspects that Debbie is up to something; “She’s much too cheerful.” Kevin supports Sion’s position as the café’s USP is being Welsh, but Meic supports Dai.
Sion assures Ffion and Jinx of his prayers, but Ffion is still blaming Britt; Sion says he will inform Macs of the situation. Mark agrees with Hywel that there are too many posh houses already, and tells him that Colin’s pub has closed and now Mark is now taking over.
Meic warns Kevin that Debbie is up to something; she is using him and has her eye on the flat. Macs ignores the protesters and goes into his house; Sion comes in through the back door and tells him about Arwen – he is completely disinterested and in the end says he has a lot on his mind and asks his father to leave. Back home, Sion tells Britt and insists that she must forgive Ffion for her accusations; what if it were one of her children?
After some thought, Jinx tells Ffion he should never have doubted her; she loves Arwen more than life itself. They are too tired and stressed, and must just focus on Arwen. Mark’s pub is going at full swing, at £2 per pint; even Meic goes there with Kevin, and they engage in arguments with Dai, over the development. Meic remarks to Kevin that Debbie is good at “getting her feet under the table”. Mark is selling so much beer that he says he must order some barrels for the wedding, and then realises what he has said. “What wedding?” splutters Meic, and looks over at Debbie and Kevin. She looks sheepish and then admits what she has done, and that she wants to marry Kevin. Meic is furious, and Kevin is astonished, but then says he thought she’d never ask him.
Monday 20 May 2013
At the hospital, Ffion is reluctant to let Arwen have an operation; when Sion and Britt arrive, it does nothing to calm her, especially when Britt mentions alcohol, and she is asked to leave. Courtney sees one of Angela’s flyers and tells her mother that she feels stupid, not having been told about the nursing business; Angela is very keen to get Courtney living with her again. Just as Gwynfor has signed the petition at APD in return for a discount, Courtney comes in and complains to Jim that he has also kept her in the dark. Later, Jim finds Angela in the café and objects; her response is that Courtney’s proper place is with her mother.
Iolo pushes Gethin to the chip shop, negotiating the step, and Gethin announces that Iolo has to fit a handrail on the stairs. Then Macs comes in for some chips, and when Britt mentions Arwen, he says he is not interested and walks out.
Ffion and Jinx are given the test results, and are told that Arwen needs an operation tomorrow; she is strong enough, and despite Ffion’s objections, Jinx says they have to do this, for Arwen’s sake. They are told that she was born with this condition, and it was not caused by Ffion’s drinking; they will probably have to look for a liver donor within two years, and immediately Ffion wants to be the donor, but is disappointed that her liver may have been damaged.
Angela visits Gethin, prompted by his father, then Britt comes in, ostensibly to collect a gift from Iolo for Arwen, but while they are alone, she tells Gethin he is taking advantage, and warns him to treat Iolo fairly; “If not, you’ll have me to deal with! Worse than that, you’ll have to deal with Garry!” Gethin seems remarkably unimpressed.
Iolo takes Gethin round to the garage, to arrange to get the van checked; when he goes to fetch it, Gethin mentions that Britt threatened to send Garry round, and the reply is that he doesn’t usually hit people in wheelchairs. Later he expresses his displeasure to Britt for saying what she did, and tells her he does not want to threaten anyone, as he is trying to change.
When Sion gets home he tells Britt he wonders how Ffion will cope with Arwen’s operation, and hopes she will not turn to drink again. Jinx apologises to Ffion for what he has said, but if Ffion cannot be a donor, they must approach Macs – they will go together. However, Macs responds in the same way as before: he is not interested, wants nothing to do with Arwen, and will not even take a test. When he asks them to leave, Ffion pleads, “How can you be so heartless? Jinx snarls, “There’s something seriously wrong with you!”
Tuesday 21 May 2013
Jinx tells Sion and Britt that Macs refused to even consider being a donor, and Sion cannot understand it; Jinx says that he needs to realise what his son is really like. Moc is irritable and says he needs to see Gethin; Anita says it is a good thing that he moved out. When Sion goes to see Macs he gets the same response – Macs is not interested in helping; Sion says he is not moving until his son sees sense, but has no success, even when relating how Macs had his appendix out, years ago. Macs says that it is “Not my fault that she damaged her liver!”
Moc goes to Iolo’s and gives Gethin clothes and money; Gethin tells him not to send Angela round again. He feels like getting drunk, saying that being “legless” will not make much difference. On CwmFM, Hywel is interviewing Diane about the housing development.
Arwen’s operation has been postponed until later; Sion is ashamed of being Macs’ father, and Ffion has never felt so guilty. “What sort of mother am I?” she sobs, as Sion tells her she is an excellent mother. She asks if he will christen Arwen, and Jinx agrees as it means so much to her. He tells her, “Ffion, you’re hard work — but you’re worth it!”
At Mark’s bar, crowds have arrived, and he puts the price up to £2.50. When Iolo and Gethin come in, they find Moc there. But when Macs walks in, Gwyneth goes for him: “He refused to save his daughter’s life!” Colin says he would give his heart for Izzy or Lois, but Macs tells Iolo, “It’s complicated.” Mark then orders him out. Diane and Anita are having a drink at home, and Anita moans that work and Gethin always come first; when Dai comes in, they go off to Mark’s pub.
Sion christens Arwen, just in time before they take her to theatre; Ffion and Jinx wait disconsolately, while Sion, at home, is also worrying. At Mark’s, the throng are all drunk and singing; Moc takes the inebriated Anita home, whilst Diane is asleep on the sofa. Iolo goes to see Macs, and is told, “I’m not giving part of my liver to anyone! Go, please.”
Jinx is on the phone to Sion: Arwen has come through the operation, but they do not know if it has sorted out the problem. Jinx tries to reassure Ffion, “We’ll get through this — the three of us.”
Wednesday 22 May 2013
After the drunken night before, Mark wakes on the sofa and finds Diane asleep there, then realises it is noon!
After a disturbed night with Bobi, Eifion suggests to Cadno that they go out somewhere, but she tells him to get to work. Angela arrives at the farm to talk about Marian; when she leaves she says that Cadno looks tired.
Macs is also hung over, and when the school phones he tells them he is too ill to come in. Mark’s house looks like a pigsty, and Diane’s head feels like a bucket; Dai walks in through the open door, and drags Diane home.
At the café, Ricky says he does not want to stay with his father; Debbie says she is taking the afternoon off to look for wedding venues, and tells Meic that when she is married to Kevin, he will not have a say, but Meic reminds her he owns 40% of the café. Dai and Diane look at the plans for the building development and realise that, without a strip of Penrhewl land, they will not be able to do anything, with Dai thinking he might be able to make some money.
Eifion meets Macs, who has been to get some cans of beer, and hears about the Arwen business; Macs says he never wants to be any child’s father, and Eifion cannot understand why Macs will not help her. Macs complains that all the village is against him, and Eifion commiserates, saying, “We all have to live with our mistakes.”
Debbie and Angela are looking for a wedding dress, and ignore Ricky when he comes to the flat; they find one on an auction site, so bid for it. Later, instead of bidding for the bridesmaid’s dress that Angela likes, she instead bids £1.50 for another one.
Hywel goes to the farm to point out how close the houses will be, and how their strip of land is crucial; soon after, Dai and Diane arrive, and put their point of view. Cadno wants to think about it, and tells them to go. She says the money would come in handy, and they discuss the matter; at appears that she is becoming warmer towards Eifion.
Meic accuses Debbie of spending more of Kevin’s money, and then she leaves to go and sort out a venue. “This wedding is for you and no-one else,” he growls, “What are you really after — a big wedding, or marrying Kevin?” She threatens that if he opposes her, he will lose Kevin.
Thursday 23 May 2013
Ffion says it is so quiet at home without Arwen; Jinx tries to get Ffion to sleep, and then Angela arrives and tells her that for Arwen’s sake she ought to sleep. Angela advises Jinx that any relative has a chance of being a match, Jinx thanks her for a very useful chat, and as soon as she leaves he phones to arrange a blood test; when they call back, he rushes off to the hospital.
Wil is upset because Hywel has not picked him for the rugby team, so Sheryl tries to get Garry to talk to Hywel about it. Instead, Garry explains to Wil that Hywel is the boss and picks the team; he advises to count to five before saying anything, but Wil is unimpressed. Garry tells Sheryl that Wil needs to learn to cope with disappointment, but Sheryl will not understand. At the Deri, the price of beer is down to £2.00 between 7 and 8pm, to try and encourage customers.
As his house is in such a mess, Mark borrows a large Numatic vacuum cleaner from school; Ricky says he cannot do homework with all the noise of the parties. Before Mark can start on the cleaning, Gaynor visits to talk about Ricky’s work. Offering to help clearing up, she uncovers the vacuum cleaner, and suggests Mark has been stealing, but Mark says “borrowing”; she tells him to sort himself out and make sure the machine is back at school by the morning.
Angela takes Courtney to her house and promises to be back by six, when they can have a”home-cooked” meal. Then she goes to Penrhewl, to give Marian her hand exercises for arthritis; she find some old records, and she and Marian end up dancing, reminiscing at length about the dances when Marian met her husband, Bob. After some scheming by Colin, Mark goes to the Deri, haggles over the price of the remaining barrels and agrees with Ed on £30 each – his beer-selling is over.
Angela is late home, and Courtney has been alone in a strange house for hours; she might as well have been with her Dad. She wants to go back there, but agrees to stay for tonight.
At the hospital, Jinx is talking to Arwen, asleep in her cot:
“I just want to be your Dad – I want that more than anything. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me, and I’m going to do all I can to help you. I’ve taken the test, and I’m hoping to be a match. I’m not telling Mam, I don’t want to disappoint her – she’s been through enough already. This will be a surprise from you and me.”
Friday 24 May 2013
Ffion and Jinx are anxious about the result of the operation; Jinx says that Arwen is a strong character, like her mother. They agree not to argue, but Ffion sees everyone behaving as normal, while Arwen is so small and lying in a hospital cot; Jinx may not be her biological father, but he is her dad.
Meic accuses Debbie of not caring about anything or anybody; when Kevin comes in she threatens to leave. If Meic keeps on like this, there might not be a wedding. Sheryl comes in and mentions that Wil is not in the rugby team; Kevin expresses surprise.
Sion and Hywel are talking about Penrhewl’s strip of land when Macs comes out of the shop and is confronted by Jinx, who says, “I will be at the hospital later, holding your little girl’s hand.” He wants to know how Macs sleeps at night, too much of a coward to do what’s right. Hearing raised voices, Sioned comes out of the shop, and Jinx loudly announces that Macs refused to take a blood test. “Tell me why!” shouts Jinx, and Sion drags Macs home; he will not talk to his father, and then Sioned arrives, asking if what Jinx said was true. She says she thought she knew him – there must be a reason, but he says it is private, and he then reminds her about almost killing her mother, and killing her father. She calls him a coward, and when he replies that she does not understand, tells him to explain. When she says she regrets ever knowing him, and that he is worthless and not fit to be around normal people, he responds that she now is free to destroy other people’s marriages.
Kevin has a word with Hywel, and he agrees to make Wil a sub, and allow him some playing time. Later, when Sheryl thanks Kevin for his intervention, Garry is somewhat angered, and takes Sheryl home for a private chat; he tells her that Wil cannot always have his own way, and asks if she is not satisfied with the way he handles things. Kevin tells his father to leave Debbie alone, but Meic accuses her of wanting to get her hands on the café, and says that “getting on quite well” with her is not a valid reason to marry.
Kevin finally explodes, telling him to take his taxis and run them elsewhere. “Go away and don’t come back until you can be civil to the woman I’m going to marry!” Meic warns him he will regret this, but Kevin’s mind is made up.
Macs makes an unexpected visit to Jinx, and says he has changed his mind – he will have a blood test, so the sceptical Jinx makes him ring for an appointment there and then. Jinx rushes to the hospital with the good news, arriving just as Sion says that he and Iolo will take the test, and Ffion has made peace with Britt.
As Ffion and Jinx embrace, back at home, Macs makes another phone call, this time to cancel the appointment.
Monday 27 May 2013
Ffion is is tears, having been told that the operation has eased the symptoms, but Arwen will need a transplant in the next two years; Ffion is a match, but her liver has been damaged. They see that Macs is their only hope, but he does not arrive for his appointment — Jinx suspects that he has cancelled.
The school minibus, with Macs in charge, arrives back in the village after a trip to the Urdd Eisteddfod; the children – and Dani – alight at the bus stop.
Sion has agreed to perform the marriage, and Debbie is watching the bidding on the cheap dress for Angela; she learns that neither Vicky or Liam can come to the wedding. Dani takes a rugby shirt for Wil, and tells Sheryl that she went with Mark because he was upset at Debbie getting married.
Meic is running the taxi business from home, and is still moaning about Debbie taking advantage of Kevin; despite Anita telling him that Kevin must make his own mistakes, Meic is convinced he is going to get hurt.
Ffion marches round to Macs’ house to confront him, telling him it is difficult to be civil when he behaves like this; “What have I done to make you hate me this much?” she demands, “Is it revenge for having your baby?” She does not want Arwen to miss out on her childhood; Macs says there is a risk, being a donor, so Ffion tells him, “This is not about you, it’s about Arwen!” She sits down, saying she will not leave until he changes his mind. She talks of when she had her fourth miscarriage, and how she almost aborted Arwen, but Iolo changed her mind. “Please don’t make her suffer more pain – she doesn’t deserve this! Please help,” she sobs, and he agrees, again, to take the test tomorrow.
Mark is contacted by Gaynor, reprimanding him for taking Dani in the school minibus, and says that it is easy, picking on the caretaker. Meic asks Sheryl to speak to Kevin on his behalf, to stop Debbie ruining his life. Meanwhile, Debbie has secured the bridesmaid’s dress for £8.50, and is talking about a honeymoon in Spain.
Macs comes downstairs, picks up a bag and his keys, and leaves the house, putting up his hood. Ffion reports back to Jinx, who says he would have strangled Macs; Jinx has the good news that Arwen can go home tomorrow, and Ffion says that this is just the beginning, but it will not be easy. Arwen sleeps soundly.
Tuesday 28 May 2013
Sion gets a letter, telling him he is not a match, and neither is Iolo; Gaynor has not been able to contact Macs, and it is thought he is at the hospital. Dai’s plan is to buy the strip of land for £100,000 and sell to the developer for £250,000, but Jim is reluctant to agree; Dai says that all Eifion knows is mucking out and selling sheep. Britt goes to Jinx’s and offers to do some cleaning before Arwen comes home. She is overjoyed to see Arwen so well, and Ffion so positive.
Gemma gives Mark a free pint after his run-in with Gaynor; as she is in the Deri, he demands an apology. She says that the governors will not be told, and there is also the matter of the vacuum cleaner, so he is placated. When Hywel tells him, “That put you in your place!” he says that he will strike, and see how she runs the school.
Sion is at Eileen’s, telling her and Jim that there are 22 empty houses in Cwmderi already, and Eileen fears a supermarket. Sion meets Iolo and goes to the Deri for lunch, still assuming that Macs is at the hospital. Eileen says that Penrhewl had an application turned down for traffic issues, and Jim had the same for his holiday village proposal. Later Jim tells Dai and Diane that the idea is too risky, and it is irresponsible to gamble with the future of APD.
Mark announces to Gaynor that he is on strike, and that the cleaners will support him, but Gaynor points out that it is half-term. He says he is being punished for taking pupils to the Eisteddfod, voluntary work for the Welsh language, and will take the matter to the Union. He later distributes a flyer to the shop, reading, “Workers’ Rally —Support Mark Jones.”
When Britt gets home after the relationship with Ffion is restored, she is very happy, until Iolo says he has spoken to Angharad Owen, who does the blood tests, and Macs did not have an appointment; now he is now unreachable. Britt snarls angrily that she cannot believe it.
Iolo goes to tell Ffion and Jinx the news, and Ffion is livid; they must contact Val and Nesta, she says, but Jinx reveals that he has also taken the test and is still waiting for the result. “I want so much to look after both of you!” he assures Ffion; as he hugs her, Iolo tells them he will find Macs if it is the last thing he does.
Wednesday 29 May 2013
At last, Macs answers a call from Iolo, who tells him that Ffion is in pieces, but Macs cannot take any more; Iolo says he will meet him, but Macs insists he tells no-one. When Iolo finds him in Ffion’s office at school, he says that Arwen is better off with Ffion and Jinx as parents, and should have nothing to do with him. After Iolo warns him that the guilt will gnaw at him for ever, Macs reveals that he cannot be a donor, as he has Hepatitis B, after being raped.
Most people recover after two years, but not him – he has the chronic form, which could lead to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Although the tests could not show it, he is sure that Scott gave it to him. Iolo assures him of his support and that of Sion, and takes him home.
Dai is trying to persuade Eifion and Cadno to sell him the strip of land, offering £50,000, which Eifion increases to £80,000 and then says they want to think it over. Cadno says they could build new sheep pens with the money, but then she warns Eifion not to stray again. If the building plans are refused, the land would only be worth a few hundred.
At the café, Marian asks Angela to pay some money in at the bank and hands over her handbag; when Angela comes back, Marian says her ring is missing from the bag, and accuses Angela of stealing it. When they get back to Penrhewl, and she is accused again, Angela says she will not call there any more. Wil is going to play rugby, and Sheryl will go with Kevin to watch; Garry is rather put out that he was not asked.
Back home, Macs talks about how he kept the secret – Sioned thought he had ME, and he cannot bear people knowing what it is and wondering how he got it. Iolo tells him, “You’re a carrier. You had it when you slept with Ffion. She has a right to know!” but Macs cannot handle this and goes off to bed.
At the match Sheryl asks Kevin if he loves Debbie, or is just settling for someone who happens to be there; she just wants him to be happy. “Sheryl Ann knows you better than anyone,” she says. When they get back to Garry’s flat Wil is excited that he scored, and Garry says he will have to come to watch him next time.
Thursday 30 May 2013
In the café Garry tells Debbie that Kevin was sharing a picnic with Sheryl, and that he should have been with his fiancée. Ffion has a phone call from Sion to tell her that Macs is home, meanwhile Jinx has also had a call – he tells Ffion that he is a match for Arwen; they are both absolutely delighted. Jinx then goes round to Macs’; as Iolo is bringing Gethin back from physiotherapy, he sees Jinx at Macs’ door and rushes over there. Jinx announces to Macs that he is a match – “You can go on living your selfish life without sparing a thought for anyone.” He goes on to tell Macs that all his family are ashamed of him and that he is the lowest of the low. “If she asks who her father was, it will be my pleasure to say he was not worth knowing!”
When he has gone, Iolo insists that Macs tell Ffion, as he has slept with her, knowing he had Hepatitis B – that is illegal! Macs replies that she would have been tested, and to stop interfering.
At Penrhewl, Eifion says that Marian must have mislaid the ring, and then miraculously finds it in the cutlery drawer, earning Marian’s admiration; he just looks smug. Later, when Marian apologises to Angela, he again looks pleased with himself.
Gethin has to fill in the benefits forms, and asks Angela if she will write a letter, describing his situation, and she agrees. Debbie asks Sheryl and Garry around for dinner, and Garry tries to refuse, but is overruled. When they arrive, Debbie warns Sheryl off Kevin; she says she is not interested in him. After a rather fraught meal, during which Debbie announces she wants to go to Australia on honeymoon, Garry is glad to be leaving; Kevin says he is quite content with Debbie, kisses Sheryl and they go.
Taking one look at Debbie sprawled on the sofa, he seems to have second thoughts. When back at the flat, Sheryl tells Garry what Debbie said to her, and reckons that those two are well suited. but Garry looks suspicious. Later, when Gethin hears about Marian’s memory loss, he tells them if, his memory goes, to shoot him. Iolo goes round to Ffion’s with some flowers, emphasising that Macs has not sent him, and asks where he and his father stand now – do they want to break off all ties? He also apologises for his wedding outburst. Ffion and Jinx are much happier now, after Jinx’s news.
Friday 31 May 2013
Mark is practising his speech while Gemma and Dani are painting banners; Ricky calls it, “embarrassing.” When Moc visits Gethin he is asked for a bank statement to show his permanent address.
As Iolo’s van has a puncture, Colin pushes him to the garage, but they meet Gwyneth, who calls him a scrounger, wanting to ruin people’s lives again. Debbie is relegating work to second place, and Meic protests again to Kevin, but is ignored. Debbie tells Gwyneth in the Deri that Sheryl is jealous of her, and no wonder – no-one wants Garry as a partner!
Garry is thinking about earlier, when he caught Meic talking to Sheryl about Kevin in the salon; he texts her to “come home now.” When she arrives he demands to know what is going on with her and Kevin. She tells him Meic asked her to dissuade him from marrying Debbie, and how she told him they are well-suited. Garry is convinced that Meic wants Sheryl and Kevin back together, but is glad that he didn’t throttle Kevin.
At his interview, Gethin is judged as fit to work; as he has no problem using his hands he could operate a till in a supermarket. He argues that there are no jobs for the able-bodied, so who would want him.
Garry goes to see Meic, and after first sympathising that his son was marrying Debbie — “A father has a right to worry, getting a daughter-in-law like her!” — warns him not to drag Sheryl into it. “I hope we understand each other,” he concludes.
The Workers’ Rally outside the Deri at 2pm is a failure, and Mark gives up and goes into the pub. He has resigned himself to to crawling back to Gaynor when they hear shouts outside — a whole gang of schoolchildren are marching with the banners, chanting, “Who do we support — Mr Jones!”
After Mark addresses them, Gaynor takes the microphone, apologises to Mark, and describes him as a great asset to the school, thereby defusing the situation. Mark’s strike is over, and he says he owes Ricky one for organising the march.
